What To Do When You Notice Bleeding Gums!

What To Do When You Notice Bleeding Gums!

By Wright Smiles

There’s something that you’ve heard about before and that can be a symptom of underlying gum disease (or not!). It’s bleeding gums. When you notice at any given moment, whether during eating or brushing your teeth, that your gum tissue is bleeding, you may wonder what the appropriate response is! Are you always supposed to call our Southlake, TX practice when you recognize that you have some bleeding going on? Are there times during which you may address the problem on your own? Allow us to respond to a few questions that just might cover the bases for you, so you’re ready, just in case.

What If I Think It Might Be Gingivitis?

If you think that your bleeding gums may be the result of gingivitis, perhaps because we mentioned inflammation to you in the past or because you recognize other symptoms (like swelling, redness, purple gums, pain while eating, etc.), then you should call us. We will need to see you for a checkup and it should happen just as soon as possible. Gingivitis is something we can treat and need to treat to prevent it from becoming a more complex disease called periodontitis.

What If I Am Completely Sure It’s Not Gum Disease?

Are you absolutely sure you don’t have gum disease? If so, to patients who know exactly where the blood is coming from and why (perhaps you slipped when you were eating and your fork nicked your gum tissue, leading to light bleeding), we offer the following suggestion: Rinse your mouth with salt water as a natural cleanser. You may do this several times a day to keep it clean. Don’t touch the abrasion. Keep an eye on it to ensure it is healing. If you notice that it isn’t or that the tissue surrounding it is red or inflamed, give us a call! Otherwise, this should heal up nicely without our team’s help.

What If I Have No Idea What’s Happening?

What do you do if all you know is that you have bleeding gums? You’re not sure why it’s happening or how it started? This is a moment in which you should contact us! Come on in and let us tell you what’s happening, so you’re not gambling with your oral health.
