Did you know that good oral health can actually help you enjoy better overall health? When you have healthy teeth and gums, not only are you less likely to have sensitive teeth, bad breath, cavities, or other conditions that directly affect your mouth, you actually reduce your risk for developing systemic health issues. Research shows that there is a significant relationship between dental health and the health of your other internal systems. Dental infections can spread to the bloodstream, affecting other parts of the body, and inflammatory oral disorders, like gum disease, can prompt inflammation in other parts of the body if left untreated.

Additionally, regular visits to your dentist can help you avoid serious oral health conditions that require intensive restorative treatment. By being proactive in your dental care, you are making significant steps toward maintaining a healthy smile. That proactive approach starts at an early age. A gentle family dentist can help foster an early positive association with preventive dentistry, making checkups fun.

As family dentists, Dr. Wright and Dr. Heron welcome patients starting at age three. As parents, Dr. Wright and Dr. Heron understand the concerns that parents have for their children’s dental health. They also understand the reservations some children may have about the dentist chair. That’s why we do our best to maintain a friendly, positive office environment where our young patients can feel comfortable and taken care of. When coupled with day-to-day home care, preventive services provided by your gentle family dentist can help you to keep your smile beautiful and healthy. Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron can help you learn the best way to care for your teeth including making recommendations about how to brush and floss at home.

What Should I Expect at My Appointment?

Your checkup will be fairly simple. A visual check of your mouth will be performed with the help of a small mirror and common exploratory tools. Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron will examine your teeth gently and will take the opportunity to look at your gums. The dentist will use a dental tool to gently feel the surface of your teeth to check for early signs of decay that may not show up in X-rays. Your dentist will also check your soft oral tissues for any abnormalities that could indicate a number of issues, including oral cancer.

Imaging technology may be used during your appointment in the form of X-rays or by using an intraoral camera. X-rays show the dentist the structure of your teeth and jaw, while an intraoral camera displays an up-close view of the surfaces of oral structures. The doctor will review his or her findings with you and, if needed, a treatment plan is decided upon at that time. Your checkup will also include a routine dental cleaning unless you have periodontal disease or another condition that requires a special cleaning. Your family dentist will work with you every step of the way to address any concerns you may have.

What Preventive Services are Offered?

We offer the following preventive services:

As a family dentist, Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron can help you or your child remain calm and relaxed throughout a dental procedure. The doctor may recommend the use of nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide works quickly and gently to give you a relaxed sense of euphoria. The gas is combined with oxygen and delivered via a nose mask throughout the procedure, making the experience one that may include a few giggles. After the mask is removed, the effects of nitrous oxide begin to fade within minutes.
