Truths and Myths about Professional Teeth Whitening

Truths and Myths about Professional Teeth Whitening

By Wright Smiles

A white, sparkling smile can have a tremendous impact for your appearance. A lighter smile will rejuvenate your face. In many cases, it can even make you look several years younger. These are just some of the reasons that professional teeth whitening is one of the most popular elective dental treatments available. However, despite its popularity, there are a number of common misconceptions regarding teeth whitening. Read on to learn the truth about this treatment and to distinguish fact from myth.

What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?

At our Southlake practice, we offer two teeth whitening options. Both in-office Zoom! and at-home whitening use peroxide gel to reduce dental stains. During in-office treatment, which takes about an hour, we will apply the gel to your teeth and activate it with a specially designed light. After treatment, your smile could be up to eight shades lighter. In-office whitening can also produce dramatic results. This treatment uses custom-made trays and a tube of whitening gel to diminish dental stains in about two weeks.

Common Whitening Misconceptions

Truth or Myth? – Whitening treatments are uncomfortable.

Myth. Teeth whitening involves minimal discomfort. In some cases, whitening can cause some minor sensitivity, but this will usually fade within a few days. If you already suffer from dental sensitivity, let us know before we begin your treatment. We may recommend in-office whitening or a special sensitivity toothpaste to reduce your risk for discomfort.

Truth or Myth? – Professional teeth whitening is expensive.

Myth. We offer affordable cosmetic treatment, and we will help you find the treatment that most suits your budget. For example, if you are looking to save money, you may be a good candidate for at-home whitening.

Truth or Myth? – The results of my whitening treatment will be permanent.

Myth. Teeth whitening results are not permanent, but they could last up to a year. Additionally, with approval from your dentist, it is safe to undergo routine touchup treatments. Combined with proper dental hygiene, these touchups could keep your smile white for years to come.

Truth or Myth? – Professional teeth whitening is better than over-the-counter products.

Truth. Many do-it-yourself treatments contain high levels of peroxide, which can erode your enamel and inflame your gums. Other whitening products do not contain enough peroxide and are ineffectual. Only dentist-provided treatment can yield the safe and dramatic results you desire.
