Mouthwash Notes From Your Family Dentist

By Wright Smiles

Mouthwash can be a touchy subject. It can be a part of a healthy dental hygiene routine, but it is rarely absolutely necessary to good dental health. For most of us, there is not a single “right” mouthwash answer. There are prescription mouthwashes and mouth rinses, that combat specific conditions. If you dentist or orthodontist requests or suggests you use a mouthwash for you or your family’s good dental hygiene, please follow through on their instructions. Otherwise, consider the pros and cons of mouthwash use, and decide what is best for you.

Is Mouthwash for You?

  • Mouthwash gives an immediate lift to the breath, and can wash food particles from the mouth after eating.
  • A minty mouthwash blast can kickstart your morning
  • Some mouthwashes contain plaque-fighting and anti-bacterial ingredients that support good brushing
  • The action of vigorously swishing mouthwash can dislodge food particles from hard to reach areas
  • There are lots of fun flavors that can pep up a dental routine that seems dull

Or Maybe Not?

  • Mouthwash is not a substitute for proper brushing and flossing
  • Mouthwash can be expensive
  • Mouthwash may mask a problem, rather than get to the root of the issue, to find a solution
  • Mouthwash can spill, stain and create a bit of a mess

Keep Mouthwash Out of Reach of Children

Mouthwash is not recommended at all for children under six years, and rarely for tweens. Keep mouthwash safely out of the reach of youngsters, as brights colors and fresh scents may make it seem more like a toy.
