Tips to Cure Bad Breath

By Wright Smiles

Halitosis, or bad breath, is an embarrassing condition that many don’t like to admit they suffer from. There are countless products like mints and gum that can work temporarily. The problem is that halitosis has many different causes. Sometimes, it can be normal, or it can be a product of a more sinister problem. Determining the cause of and treatments for chronic bad breath is therefore important to your oral health.

What Causes Halitosis?

Halitosis has many possible causes. For example, your morning breath is caused by bacteria in your mouth producing sulfur gases while you sleep. While this smell is embarrassing, it is also easily manageable. Smelly breath can also be caused by eating certain foods (like garlic), smoking, or poor oral hygiene. However, an infection in your mouth or certain diseases, such as gum disease or reflux disease, can also make your breath smell bad.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath

There are also many treatments and remedies for halitosis. For example, good oral hygiene can help. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing once, and keeping your tongue and mouth clean. ADA approved toothpastes can help protect your mouth, and certain mouth rinses can target bad-breath bacteria. Changing your toothbrush every three months will also help. In addition, drink lots of water throughout the day to keep moisture in your mouth, which helps rinse away bacteria. Chewing sugar-free gum after eating will promote saliva flow and help wash away remaining food particles.

Dental Treatments

If your bad breath persists after trying these remedies, make an appointment with your dentist to find the cause. Treatment will depend upon what is causing it, and might include a filling to treat tooth decay that may be causing rank breath. We’ll also offer case-specific instructions to improve your hygiene at home, and/or prescribe hygiene products that are more effective than over-the-counter products.
