3 Things That Aren’t Right About Your Dental Hygiene

By Wright Smiles

There are some things that just might not be right with your dental hygiene. You’re acutely aware of them! However, you don’t know what to do about them or what they mean. Since practicing your daily brushing and flossing is something that you should feel good about (and since changes can often cause a bit of alarm), our Southlake, TX team would like to help you feel much better about this part of your preventive care! Consider some common issues and how to respond to them, so you can get back to stellar habits with excellent results.

#1: It’s Causing Your Gums To Bleed

We remind you that when your gums bleed during dental hygiene, this means you probably have gum disease. Before you panic, remember that you’re likely experiencing the first phase of this issue, which is called gingivitis and is completely reversible. However, you will want to come in to see us right away for a visit! The sooner we see you and treat your gum tissue, the sooner you can recover your oral health and get back to comfortable, bleeding-free care.

#2: It Hurts

Dental hygiene isn’t supposed to hurt. Ask yourself: Am I being far too forceful? If the answer is yes, make changes to practice easier, more delicate care. If the answer is no, come in! We will examine your smile, determine what’s wrong, fix it, and send you on your merry way!

#3: It Seems Like You’re Doing It Wrong

You don’t know what’s wrong but when you practice your dental hygiene, you just have a sense that you’re not really getting it all done correctly. You want to brush and floss and for your teeth to feel clean. However, maybe you keep wondering if you’re missing a step. Maybe you feel like your teeth aren’t quite as smooth and fresh feeling as they should be. You may even be doing your best but you feel like issues like bad breath tend to linger. There are multiple things that might be going on here. A visit to learn more is best but for now, consider the following:

  • You may not be brushing long enough (two minutes each time!)
  • You might need help with your technique
  • If you’re skipping brushing and flossing at any point, then you may be noticing plaque and tartar buildup that can develop very quickly
  • You may be doing a great job with your dental hygiene but if you’re missing out on your dental cleanings with us, then your home care will not be as successful as it could be
