Which Procedure Is Right for You?

If you answered mostly A’s, you may be a better candidate for porcelain veneers. Veneers are made from a state-of-the art dental material that is extremely durable and offers a lifelike sheen. It is also stain-resistant, which may make it a better choice if you are a habitual wine or coffee drinker. To apply veneers, your dentist will reshape your teeth, removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the porcelain. Therefore, you must have a sufficient amount of healthy enamel to receive veneers. Although veneers are more costly than composite bonding, the porcelain is typically more durable than resin. Additionally, many patients and dental experts consider veneers to be the most lifelike option available.

If you answered mostly B’s, dental bonding may be more suited to your needs. After lightly etching your teeth, your dentist will apply composite resin. During this process, he or she will carefully shape the material. In this way, the dentist can conceal cosmetic blemishes and give your teeth a smooth, natural finish. With dental bonding, there is no need to reshape your teeth. Therefore, you can typically undergo this treatment, even if you have suffered enamel erosion. In many cases, composite resin can even strengthen your teeth at the same time that it covers up flaws. Although composite does not look quite as natural as dental porcelain, in the hands of a skilled dentist, it can have extremely lifelike effects. Because it costs less than other forms of cosmetic care, bonding can be an excellent investment in your smile.
