Kids And Flossing Resistance: Where To Begin?

By Wright Smiles

Of course, it’s possible that your little kids will love flossing their smiles when you are all in the bathroom performing your dental hygiene routines together. Though we hope things work out so swimmingly for you, we also know that resistance to flossing is also a big possibility. So, what should you do when this is the way things go and, though you know your child needs to floss, you’re not sure what to do about making this a reality without tears and frustration? Take a page from our book (and then call if you need additional help).

First, Ask What’s Wrong

Before you get upset, ask what’s wrong. Maybe flossing hurts but your child hasn’t verbalized this yet. Maybe your child doesn’t understand why flossing has to happen during dental hygiene and is just confused. Take time to see if you can learn a bit more.

Next, Ask Your Child About The Flavor

Think about the last time you had to eat something you really couldn’t stand or use toothpaste that made you cringe. If your child is absolutely disgusted by the floss flavor, this may be the simple culprit behind the resistance to full dental hygiene. Change the flavor!

Watch Your Child Floss

Take a closer look as your little one flosses. Something may be going on that you’re not aware of. For instance, does your child gag during flossing? Have trouble getting floss between teeth? You can figure out what’s wrong and offer solutions.

Bring Your Child To Pick Out Dental Hygiene Products

Put a positive spin on flossing and hygiene by bringing your kiddo on the next shopping trip! Letting your son or daughter help make decisions makes flossing special!
