How Do Dental Implants Work?

By Wright Smiles

Making the decision to replace your missing teeth with dental implants is a big decision. Fortunately, it is also a decision that can lead to a wonderful array of benefits, both immediate and for many years to come. However, before you can get to the very exciting details and feel prepared to take the next step, it’s a good idea to become acquainted with the basics when it comes to dental prosthetics like implants. They are unlike any other teeth replacement solution in some ways – the more you know, the easier it will be to choose implants and to know just what to expect. Learn more:

How We Begin

We will first evaluate your smile. We will need to take a look at the interior portion of your mouth for a better understanding of your tooth loss pattern. In addition, we will use advanced digital imaging to gain a clear, detailed look at your oral cavity. This provides us with a sort of blueprint of your mouth for effective, precise planning when it comes to implant placement. You may choose for us to place an implant in each open socket – or you may choose to replace multiple teeth with only a few implants, which will support a larger prosthetic like a denture.

How Implants Function

A dental implant is post made of titanium that will replace your tooth’s roots that used to reside in your gum tissue and your jawbone. We will put an implant in its place, placing it through a surgical procedure into your jawbone. Over time – usually a few months – the post will fuse to your bone tissue. The dental implant will then support a dental crown if you have chosen a single implant, or it will help support a partial or full denture. We will connect the prosthetic to your implant with the help of an abutment – or a connector accessory – that will sit directly inside the top of your implant.
