Caring For Porcelain: How Much Do You Know?

By Wright Smiles

We find that patients’ first reactions usually include great excitement when they receive a restoration made out of porcelain. Whatever your restoration – be it porcelain veneers or a crown – your enthusiasm may suddenly die down a bit when you realize it will require care. Perhaps, you may think to yourself, it is going to require extreme care that makes its benefits seem not quite so appealing anymore. Fortunately, caring for porcelain restorations is easy as long as you know what to do. Ready to find out? Read further:

Understand the Difference Between Immune and Resistant

When it comes to caring for porcelain restorations, you need to understand one very important thing: Porcelain does, indeed, resist staining. However, it is not immune, which means you should still practice some caution when indulging in staining foods and drinks. Anything that seems super-staining probably is (think red wine, coffee, berries, and more). Fortunately, you can limit your intake of these staining agents. Or, you may choose to be really good about rinsing immediately after you consume them and brushing 30 minutes later. Both will yield excellent results.

Brush and Floss Correctly

It’s true, there’s a right and wrong way to do many things including brushing and flossing. Fortunately, home care for your porcelain restorations typically requires the same care that we recommend for your natural teeth. Not sure you know what that is? It’s easy:

  • Use a fresh, soft-bristle toothbrush that you replace once every three months – if your brush starts to look old, you may replace it sooner than that
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste to protect both your teeth and your restorations – just like using hard bristles can damage your tooth or porcelain, so can other products that are too rough for your smile
  • Brush for two minutes at least twice a day to make sure you are removing every trace of plaque and food particles possible
  • Floss once daily
