Canker Sores: Helping You Identify What’s Happening

By Wright Smiles

You have heard of canker sores and you know that they’re nothing to worry about. However, whether you’ve had what you think are cankers throughout your life or you’ve never had one but, lo and behold, you think one has just cropped up, don’t worry: We can help you determine what you’re seeing. Curious about how to positively identify these less than welcome visitors, so you can get on with daily life as you wait for them to go away? Gather up some helpful facts from our Southlake, TX team!

They’re Never On Your Lips

If you’re seeing a sore on your lip tissue, it’s not going to be a canker sore! They only develop inside of your mouth. It could be a cold sore (which is something different and will likely have a blistered appearance) or otherwise. Check with us or your doctor for additional details!

Their Coloring Is Specific

We know that what you want is to be able to identify sores based on appearance. Fortunately, this is often quite easy with canker sores. They’re white or yellow in the middle and are surrounded by a border of red.

They Are Uncomfortable!

Canker sores are often very painful! While you may wonder if you’re going to need to come in for some kind of fix for this problem, you can usually deal with it on your own. You may purchase numbing ointment or take over-the-counter pain relievers to dull the discomfort. Leave the area alone, too. It should heal up and become less and less uncomfortable as you do this. If the sore isn’t painful at all, it may be some other type of lesion, so come see us!

If You’re Not Sure, Come See Us!

If you’re just not sure what’s going on, though you think you have a canker sore, remember: You’re not a dentist! It’s wonderful if you can troubleshoot on your own, of course, and save yourself additional trips in to see us. However, we are always happy to see you and are even happier when you choose to receive a diagnosis and advice from us, rather than making assumptions!
