3 Questions to Ask Your Dentist at Every Checkup

By Wright Smiles

Simply showing up at your dentist’s office once every six months is a good start to keeping your smile healthy, but excellent dental health requires active involvement, like asking questions and interacting with your dentist during your checkup. If you’re unsure of anything, your dentist will be happy to answer your questions. To make the most of your experience, be sure to ask the right questions, especially how to lower any chances of developing issues that might require more than just a dental cleaning to address.

1. Am I cleaning my teeth right?

Between professional cleanings, your teeth require that you clean them at home at least twice every day with your toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. Even though you’ve been doing it for most of your life, however, there may be things that you still miss when it comes to your daily hygiene routine. Be sure to ask your dentist if you’re cleaning teeth correctly, or if there is anything you should do differently to better control plaque and tartar buildup.

2. Does it look like I have bruxism?

Bruxism, or habitual teeth grinding, often occurs at night, and you may not realize that it’s a problem until you visit your dentist. If the damage to your teeth is obvious, then your dentist will point it out and recommend treatment during your visit. If you’re unsure, however, then feel free to ask your dentist if you should be concerned about excessive teeth grinding.

3. Should I consider teeth whitening?

Even with the best care and maintenance, teeth can eventually develop stains and lose their youthful glow. Teeth whitening is a quick, noninvasive procedure that can safely erase surface teeth stains and brighten the natural appearance of your teeth. Ask your dentist if it’s time for you to consider a brighter smile, and which teeth whitening option would work best for you.
