3 Daily Questions To Ask Yourself When You Don’t Want A Cavity

By Wright Smiles

What types of questions do you ask yourself about your oral health on a daily basis? If you’re sort of shrugging your shoulders because, like most patients, you just go through your dental hygiene routine, figure you’re doing a good job, and leave it at that, then we have some ideas for you! When you remain conscious about what you’re doing and take the time to check in on your habits on a daily basis, it becomes much easier to avoid problems like cavities (and the need for dental fillings in the future). Want to stay in the cavity free club? Take some of our Southlake, TX practice’s questions to heart!

#1: Did You Brush Twice And Floss Today?

Ask yourself if you’ve brushed twice. Then, ask yourself if you’ve flossed. Make sure that by the end of the day, when you’re cuddled up in bed and ready to go to sleep, that the answer to these questions is “yes.” If there’s a “no” in there at any point, then you’re setting your smile up for the development of cavities and a need for dental fillings. It’s true. Even if you’ve brushed and flossed but you missed one of your brushing sessions. Every detail counts!

#2: Are You Timing Your Brushing Sessions?

If you’re not actually relying on some outside source of timing to ensure you’re brushing for two minutes when you brush, then you might be missing out on part of your brushing. It might feel like two minutes. You might even think that you can count the seconds down correctly. However, to be sure that you’re on track, it’s best to use a timer of some sort to help you avoid too-short of sessions.

#3: How’s Your Oral pH Today?

Right, you might not necessarily phrase the question this way. However, remember that when you’re eating sugary foods, starchy foods, carby foods, and you’re drinking acidic drinks, all of these actions are leading toward an acidic mouth and the potential for softened enamel. Over time, you can damage your enamel and cavities and a need for dental fillings become more likely. So, ask yourself how you’re doing with keeping your teeth clean throughout the day and your mouth neutral. If you need to cut back on certain choices or drink more water, you’ll make a mental note and get busy!
