What Is Included In a Dental Exam and Cleaning?

By Wright Smiles

Knowing exactly what a dental exam includes is helpful if you want more information or would like to explain the process to a family member. A dental exam helps us evaluate your overall dental health, explain risks for tooth decay or gum disease, and identify any issues that require treatment. The exam includes cleaning or specifically the removal of deposits or stains on your teeth. In addition, your exam might include x-rays or other diagnostics. Depending on your individual circumstances, exams are usually twice a year.

Getting to know you

No special preparation is required for the exam, but please be sure to ask us about any concerns or questions you may have. We will ask if you have health problems or if you take any medications, as both of these issues can sometimes impact the health of your teeth or gums. Your lifestyle, diet, or use of tobacco products may also be discussed to help evaluate your oral health.

What Happens During Your Visit

Using mirrors and other tools, each tooth is looked at and evaluated during your exam. If you have fillings, crowns or bridges, they are also evaluated and checked for any signs of wear. Using a variety of instruments, tartar – hardened plaque – is removed above and below the gum line. Removing tartar is important because it is a leading cause of tooth decay. As a precautionary measure, your exam can include a check for signs of oral cancer. The inside of your mouth as well as the jaw and sides of your neck are examined during this part of the exam.

Follow-up

During or after the exam, you will receive feedback on your overall oral health and risk for certain conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease. If required, additional treatments or follow-up visits are explained and scheduled at your convenience.
