The Joys of Laser Dentistry

By Wright Smiles

In the world of dentistry, technology is as important as knowledge and education when it comes to advancement. For instance, technologically advanced digital X-rays provide faster, safer, more accurate diagnostic images, and innovative materials like dental porcelain help us create more lifelike restorations. In addition, lasers have also changed much of the face of modern dental care, allowing us to perform numerous restorative and cosmetic treatments with enhanced precision, increased patient comfort,  and significantly shorter recovery times (if any).

Gum Health

Gum disease is one of the more prominent dental health issues today, and left untreated, the disease may place you at risk for losing one or more teeth. As the name suggests, it attacks the gums and periodontal tissues that surround, support, and protect the roots of your teeth. In severe cases, some of your gum tissue can become so damaged and diseased that it needs to be trimmed away in order for your gums to heal and recover.

Traditionally, this often required surgery (with a scalpel), and the placement of sutures for proper healing. With our specially-calibrated soft tissue diode laser, we can remove severely infected gum tissue without a scalpel, and with more precision to minimize nearby tissue trauma. As a concentrated beam of light, the laser also seals blood vessels as it passes over the tissues, minimizing bleeding and eliminating the need for sutures after the procedure.

Smile Enhancement

Even if your gums are healthy, you may have excessive or uneven tissues that affect the symmetry of your gum line, and therefore your smile’s appearance. Gum contouring, or reshaping your gum line, is one of the more popular applications of laser dentistry. The cosmetic treatment is often used in conjunction with one or more enhancements, like porcelain veneers, to create a new smile in a comfortable, conservative manner.
