Recycle Your Christmas Tree by Jan.13!

By Wright Smiles

Do you save your newspaper and recycle your cans? Thank you on behalf of the environment, and the space saved in area landfills. Southlake has a program to keep another big item out of our landfills: The Southlake Christmas Tree Recycle Program. This program recycled over 650 trees last year, and it could have an even more amazing result this year, with your help! If you have a live tree that you will be taking down before January 13, consider participating in the Christmas Tree Recycling Program.

How Does the Program Work?

To prepare your tree: please remove all decorations, and remove any base from the tree. Drop off the bare tree at Bicentennial Park at 450 W. Southlake Boulevard. Please use the Bicentennial Drive entrance off 1709 (W. Southlake Blvd).  The last day to drop off a tree is January 13, 2017.

What Happens to the Trees?

The city will turn the trees into wood chips, which are attractive in yards and flower beds. Wood chip mulch helps protect plants roots from temperature extremes and holds moisture in the soil during dry periods. Wood chips also help prevent weeds from emerging as the weather warms up. Residents are invited (and encouraged) to come pick up the mulch to use in their yards and around shrubbery. Mulch pick up dates are January 14 – 21. No appointment is necessary.
