Question: What are the usual areas where tori might show up? Is there a way to know if that’s what’s in my mouth or if I have some other type of growth?

Answer: You may see them under your tongue, sticking out into the area that looks like a well. You may notice them along your mouth’s roof. You may also notice them along the outside of your upper back molar (on the surface facing your cheeks). You’ll know what it is when you visit us!

Question: If you discover that I do, in fact, have tori in my mouth, are you going to need to remove them?

Answer: Probably not. Unless they are in the way of a particular type of treatment you require, they’re very big, or they are presenting hygiene concerns, they’re just fine.

Question: Why do some people have these bony growths, while others do not? Is it abnormal?

Answer: It likely has something to do with genetics or a tendency to grind or clench teeth may contribute. It’s not abnormal! In fact, it’s something we see frequently.
