Q&A: Picking Up On TMD Symptoms

By Wright Smiles

When filling out a basic questionnaire about your smile, what box do you check off when asked whether you suffer from TMJ disorder (TMD)? Do you hold your pen over the “yes” and “no” boxes, hesitating as you realize that you don’t entirely know if this problem affects you, though you have been experiencing some jaw discomfort recently? If so, it’s time you become a bit clearer on the symptoms of TMD – and it is time to schedule an appointment with us to discuss your jaw health. For now, become familiar with the basic symptoms with a Q&A session.

Questions and Answers: TMD

Question: Will I always be able to tell on my own if I am suffering from TMJ disorder?

Answer: Not necessarily. It is possible that your TMJs (temporomandibular joints – a long way of saying “jaw joints”) are not functioning well, are damaged, or are under too much stress. As this begins, you may not experience telltale signs or you may not recognize them. As a result, maintaining your six-month checkups and cleaning with us is paramount.

Question: What types of symptoms should I watch for that are common to TMJ disorder?

Answer: Common symptoms of TMD include discomfort in the form of localized pain and tenderness, discomfort while chewing, and pain that radiates causing headaches, shoulder aches, and backaches. You should also watch for signs of poor jaw function, which can include a popping jaw or a temporarily “stuck” jaw.

Question: What should I do if I notice a TMJ disorder symptom?

Answer: If you are uncomfortable, you may always use an ice pack or take an over-the-counter pain reliever. We also urge you to contact us ASAP, so we may take a look at your oral structures and provide necessary treatment.
