Gum Contouring 101

By Wright Smiles

Have you begun to learn more about gum contouring? If so, there are a variety of reasons that may have led you toward this cosmetic treatment. In any case, you are unhappy with the way your gum tissue is affecting the appearance of your smile. This may be the result of excess tissue, gum tissue that is pulling away from your smile, or even an uneven distribution of tissue over your teeth. Become familiar with how cosmetic care can improve your smile.

What Is Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that we offer to improve the beauty of your gumline, while enhancing your entire smile. We offer a noninvasive approach with the use of a laser, which allows us to offer effective, efficient treatment that promotes speedier healing and a reduced need for sutures.

We will strategically remove portions of your gum tissue according to your needs. Or, we may rely on laser treatment to encourage your gum tissue to begin growing back if you are suffering from gum recession (when your gum tissue pulls away from your teeth).

Who Qualifies for This Treatment?

You may qualify for gum contouring if you identify with one of the following:

  • Your gum tissue covers your teeth to an excessive degree, resulting in a smile that shows too much of your gum tissue, while your teeth look short, and you are unhappy with its appearance
  • Your gum tissue has receded (this often occurs due to gum disease)
  • Your smile looks unbalanced because your gum tissue developed in an asymmetrical manner – we can even this problem out with gum contouring
