Dentists Can Help You Treat Your Sleep Apnea

By Wright Smiles

Dentists can help you with a variety of issues that may not seem to fall under their jurisdiction, including sleep apnea. However, we may be able to help you find a treatment for this disorder, as we can recommend certain treatments and design special appliances that you can wear while you sleep that may alleviate symptoms. If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, then schedule an appointment with us so that we can help determine the best treatment for you.

What is It?

Sleep apnea is a sleeping condition that makes your breathing stop, then start again, while you’re asleep. It can also involve:

  • Insomnia
  • Snoring
  • Dry mouth or sore throat after you wake
  • A headache when you first wake up
  • Feelings of depression and irritability

Certain patients may be more at risk for developing this disorder, including people who are:

  • Male
  • Elderly—Patients older than 60 are at an increased risk of having this problem
  • Overweight
  • Drug or alcohol users
  • Smokers

If you develop any of the above symptoms and may be at risk, you may need to inform your doctor as soon as possible.

Treating Sleep Apnea

There are various treatments for this sleep disorder that can be offered, depending on your needs. These treatments can include:

  • At-home remedies–You can try to make certain lifestyle changes that may help you cope with the condition, such as losing weight, sleeping on your side, exercising, and quitting drugs, alcohol, or smoking.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure—This is a mask you wear while you sleep that sends air pressure through it to help you breathe at night. It is one of the most reliable methods of treating the disorder, and very common. If this device does not work for you, there are other types of devices you can wear that may work better for you.
  • Oral Appliances—This treatment can be custom-made specifically for you to help keep your airway open while you sleep. Dentists are the only ones who can prescribe certain oral appliances.
