Avoiding Gum Disease: 3 Simple Steps

Avoiding Gum Disease: 3 Simple Steps

By Wright Smiles

When the monster that is gum disease looms overhead, you may find yourself wondering if there’s anything you can do about it. You might also worry that it’s a scary beast that is difficult to avoid. Nothing could be further from the truth! True, problems with your gum health can become complicated but only if you let them. Keeping your gums healthy and free of disease is as simple as following just a few basic steps.

Step #1: Brush Along Your Gumline

You know that brushing your teeth on a daily basis is important for protecting your smile. What you might not remember, however, is that if you neglect to brush the tissue along your gumline, you are allowing plaque to accumulate (and to harden into tartar), thus greatly increasing the chance of gum disease. Brush thoroughly!

Step #2: Floss, Floss, Floss, and Floss!

Yes, this is one step. Yes, you only need to floss once a day to protect your gum health. No, not everyone does so! If you think that as long as you’re brushing thoroughly that your gums are safe enough, we urge you to think again. Flossing is an absolutely essential detail when it comes to avoiding gingivitis and full periodontal disease. Just once daily and you can feel confident about your oral health.

Step #3: See Us Every Six Months

If you don’t see us for your preventive exams every six months, you run the risk of missing the early signs of gum health problems that we can catch and treat. If you don’t see us for your cleanings every six months, you run the risk of plaque and tartar causing gum inflammation. Come see us!
