Southlake Dentist Discusses Benefits of Non-Metal Fillings

By Wright Smiles

In the past, patients who needed fillings did not have many options. They had no choice but to wear unsightly metal amalgam fillings. These metal amalgam fillings are easily seen, making it obvious when patients have had cavities filled. Fortunately, Dr. Gregory Wright offers non-metal fillings, or composite resin fillings, which are inconspicuous because they blend with your teeth.

What is a composite resin filling?

A composite filling is a mixture of plastic and glass that restores decayed teeth. Ideal for cosmetic dentistry, composite resin is insoluble, insensitive to dehydration, easy to manipulate, and reasonably priced. This type of filling differs from traditional metal fillings which are made up of mercury, tin, and copper, and have a silver appearance.

What are the advantages of composite resin fillings?

Non-metal fillings are more aesthetically pleasing because Dr. Gregory Wright will carefully tint the resin so that it matches patient’s other teeth. Friends of the patient will not even be able to see the composite resin fillings. Composite resin can even be used cosmetically to whiten teeth or to reshape disfigured teeth. Silver metal fillings would never be considered for cosmetic procedures. Lastly, metal amalgam fillings require a larger portion of the tooth to be removed, while non-metal fillings only require the diseased part of the tooth to be removed.

Can you briefly describe the non-metal filling procedure?

First, the dentist isolates the tooth from saliva to keep it dry. Then, the infected part of the tooth will be removed. The composite resin will then be placed, layer by layer, into the opening. A special blue light hardens each layer of the composite resin. Once the tooth is filled, Dr. Wright will check the occlusion, or make sure the filling isn’t too high.
