Southlake’s Gentle Dentist Uses Nitrous Oxide
We understand that you may be a bit apprehensive about coming into the dentist. At the office of Dr. Gregory Wright and Dr. Victoria Heron, your comfort is very important to us. Your gentle dentist may recommend the use of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to better facilitate your relaxation during restorative and other procedures.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as laughing gas, and has been used as an adjunct in dental procedures since the mid-1800s. Suitable for just about any patient, the gas is gentle and in most cases comes with no side effects. When administered, nitrous oxide gives you an almost immediate sense of euphoria, which may make you feel a little silly or giggly. More importantly, the dental procedure which may have been causing you some anxiety seems far away and unimportant.
How is Laughing Gas Administered?
We use a small nasal mask to give you nitrous oxide that is mixed with oxygen. You will be able to breathe normally while wearing the mask throughout your entire procedure. The mask does not get in the way of the dentist or hygienist, and is comfortable to wear.
Is Nitrous Oxide Safe for My Child?
Nitrous oxide is safe for just about any patient, including children. It works quickly in our pediatric patients, replacing their nervousness and anxiety with the tendency to giggle. The gas helps children to relax throughout a procedure. Once the mask is removed, the effects of the gas begin to wear off within minutes without lingering symptoms.
