3 Embarrassing Questions About Dental Hygiene

We know that there are many questions you feel perfectly comfortable asking us. For instance, asking if you should use a particular type of toothpaste is easy enough to bring up during a visit. However, inquiring about things that make you cringe a bit or that you think you should already know may require a ton of courage for you, which means you may end up not asking us at all! Remember, the more you know about dental hygiene, the better. Curious about something? Please let us know. For now, a few examples will help.

#1: What If I…Throw Up?

Don’t worry! This isn’t as embarrassing as you think. Everyone vomits from time to time, whether as a result of pregnancy, illness, etc. When this happens, your smile is exposed to the acids from your stomach, which you know is not a good thing. Not to worry. Here’s how your dental hygiene should play out:

  • Rinse your smile with water after you vomit
  • Wait 30 minutes
  • Brush after the 30 minutes have passed (and when you’re feeling up to it)

#2: What If I’m Too Sick To Get Up?

Assuming you really are too weak or sick to drag yourself into the bathroom for your twice daily brushing and your flossing sessions, we can help. It’s still important to do what you can to keep your smile healthy, so try the following:

  • Stay hydrated in bed with water; skip juices or carbonated beverages
  • Chew sugarless gum if you can, which will help keep your smile clean; rinsing and then chewing gum after eating is a good second to dental hygiene

#3: What If I’m Doing It Wrong?

If you’re worried that your dental hygiene isn’t on track, do not be too embarrassed to let us know. Everyone feels unsure from time to time. It’s far better to ensure you’re doing things right than to hide out, while your smile suffers!
