If you’ve looked in the mirror recently and noticed that your smile doesn’t look as bright as it used to, that’s because our tooth enamel gradually dulls with age. Whereas young tooth enamel is thick and white, older tooth enamel has thinned, revealing the greyish dentin beneath, and accumulated years of trace stains from coffee, wine, and other dark foods and beverages. While a professional teeth whitening kit from your dentist is the most reliable way to dramatically whiten your teeth, you should certainly consider adopting these three habits to ensure that your smile sparkles with or without professional teeth whitening.
1. Use Whitening Toothpaste
Most over-the-counter whitening toothpastes contain a combination of abrasives (like baking soda) and bleaching agents (like hydrogen peroxide). Abrasives effectively scrub away surface stains mechanically while the bleaching agents remove surface stains via a mild chemical reaction. While the results of whitening toothpaste isn’t nearly as quick or dramatic as teeth whitening systems from your dentist, they are relatively cheap and easy to use, since you should be brushing regularly anyway.
2. Consume Dark Food and Drinks Wisely
Ideally, you should avoid darkly colored foods and beverages altogether, but that’s just not realistic. It’s silly to expect someone to entirely remove coffee, tea, berries, cherries, soy sauce, spaghetti sauce, and all the other thousands of dark foods we Americans from his or her diet. Instead, your best bet is to consume these foods the smart way. This can be as simple as rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking coffee or eating blueberries to remove the color molecules from your mouth. Alternately, brushing soon after eating will help control the accumulation of surface stains.
3. Get Regular Checkups and Cleanings
You know how your teeth always look and feel incredibly clean after a six-month cleaning? That’s because your hygienist finishes up your cleaning with a quick polish to remove surface stains. By regularly visiting your dentist, you’ll get to experience this whiter brighter smile and, if you follow the guidelines in today’s blog, you might not ever need that whitening kit!
