Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Southlake
The experts agree: you shouldn’t wait until you’re experiencing dental pain or sensitivity to visit the dentist. A regular schedule of checkups helps to prevent conditions that may lead to the need for fillings, crowns, or periodontal disease treatments.
Why Should I Have a Checkup?
Using state-of-the-art technology and their own years of hands-on experience, Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron can detect potentially adverse conditions in your mouth even in their earliest stages. Other reasons to visit your family dentist on a regular basis include:
- Regular checkups and cleanings can help your dentist to address conditions such as bruxism (habitual teeth grinding that can lead to worn tooth enamel and TMJ disorder) in their earliest stages, when they’re more easily resolved.
- Preventing dental health problems is generally far more cost effective than treating dental problems after they have occurred.
- Your teeth feel better and look healthier after they are cleaned.
- Clean teeth and healthy gums result in fresher breath.
- Your dentist can more easily assess your gums, cheeks, throat, and other soft tissues for signs of oral cancer, leading to early detection and early treatment.
What Screenings Are Completed at My Checkup?
At your first appointment, you will meet Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron, as well as other members of our team. We have five hygienists who assist the dentists in cleanings and checkups to ensure you receive personalized care. A thorough cleaning of your teeth and an assessment of your periodontal, or gum, health is completed at each six month checkup. The dentist examines each tooth for damage or decay. He or she will make recommendations based on the findings. When needed, X-rays are completed. Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron will explain examination findings to you, offer recommendations, and develop a treatment plan if necessary.
What Can I Expect from My Dental Cleaning?
Most patients require a regular cleaning. At regular cleanings, the hygienist will use an ultrasonic cleaning tool which uses sound waves to break up plaque and tartar. The hygienist will then polish your teeth, which not only leaves your mouth feeling fresh, it also discourages plaque buildup between cleanings.
If Dr. Wright or Dr. Heron detect the presence of gum disease during your checkup, they may recommend a deep cleaning. As the name indicates, a deep cleaning delves beneath the gum line to remove plaque buildup and smooth the surfaces of the tooth’s roots to discourage further accumulation of plaque. Should you need a deep cleaning, your appointment will likely be scheduled for a future date.
Our team practices compassionate children’s dentistry on patients as young as three years old. The dentist may recommend the use of nitrous oxide gas, or laughing gas, as a gentle method of relaxation for apprehensive patients. We find that children who lack experience with dental appointments respond well to this simple and gentle solution.
